Cherished By Ancient Civilizations, Hemp is a potential game-changer for the fashion industry
VOGUE MAGAZINE – JASREEN MAYAL KHANNA
Consider this. It takes 2,700 liters of water, 0.22 pounds of fertilizer, 0.1 pounds of pesticides and 1.2 pounds of fossil fuels to produce and transport a single cotton T-shirt in India.* That’s enough water for one person to drink for two and a half years—and we are a country affected by drought. How long does this T-shirt last in your wardrobe? Now think about the resources required to produce a pair of jeans or a sari.
In addition to this, studies on buying patterns reveal that the average consumer bought 60 percent more clothing from 2000 to 2014, but kept each garment for only half as long. We’ve all read the depressing statistics about the fashion industry being responsible for colossal levels of waste and damage to our rivers, oceans, and atmosphere. It is estimated that a truck full of clothing waste is being burned or landfilled every second! While many are concerned, the currently available sustainable fashion solutions are heavy on the pocket and require significant personal commitment. This is where hemp fiber steps in.
Hemp fiber or industrial hemp is obtained from the outer layer or the bast of the Cannabis sativa plant, which is more popular for producing marijuana or hashish. However, while marijuana contains 20 percent tetrahydrocannabinol content (THC) which causes the high when smoked, industrial hemp only contains 1 percent THC.
This fiber has some incredible properties: it conducts heat, dyes well, resists mildew, blocks ultraviolet light and has natural anti-bacterial properties. It is used in many industries including paper, biodegradable plastic, construction, health food, chemical clean-ups and fuel. Automobile companies like BMW use hemp fibre to reinforce their door panels for better safety standards. There’s even an urban legend that claims the first pair of Levis jeans were made from hemp!
Just so you know, hemp isn’t a new discovery at all. It was one of the earliest domesticated plants by mankind with roots dating back to the Neolithic age in China. Hemp has had numerous applications in ancient Indian, Chinese and Egyptian civilizations such a food, fiber, and medicine.
European explorers made sails and ropes out of hemp while Rembrandt and Van Gogh painted on hemp canvases. In fact, the American declaration of independence was drafted on hemp paper. However, during the industrial revolution, the mechanical cotton gin made it more efficient to produce cotton and thus hemp production decreased tremendously, albeit at the cost of the environment.
Today, there is a dire environmental crisis on our hands and the production of hemp fiber is a highly sustainable process. It is a carbon negative crop because it actually absorbs CO2 from the air. It can be produced with half the amount of water and land in comparison to cotton has thrice the tensile strength of cotton. It can also be easily blended with other fibers and doesn’t strip the soil of nutrients. On the contrary, hemp returns 60-70 percent of all nutrients back into the soil.
So why is hemp clothing not widespread?
Prior to the ’80s, hemp fibers had a very coarse texture and thus could not be used for apparel. However, in the 1980s, Chinese scientists made a breakthrough and figured out how to remove lignin from hemp fibers without compromising its strength. Today it is similar to linen and can be used to make anything that is made out of cotton. The fabric is porous and thus retains color and is very breathable. Hemp clothing is highly durable and does not lose its shape easily. The fact that it is anti-bacterial and blocks ultraviolet rays doesn’t hurt. Turning to hemp clothing is a big step you can take as a conscious consumer and will go a long way in saving our planet’s resources.
Is hemp the textile of the future? Sports brands like Nike and Patagonia use it in their athletic wear. In Mumbai, BOHECO is an organization that has been working with policymakers, scientists and farmer groups to position India in the exploding cannabis space worldwide. They are doing studies on the wild cannabis that is widespread in North India to standardize low THC seeds that could eventually be used to grow industrial hemp within the country’s legal stipulations.
BOHECO is involved in a number of exciting projects: they have developed hemp denim in conjunction with Arvind Mills, they are working with IIT Delhi on technology to process hemp fibres from the plant and also have also launched two hemp fabric brands. Label B sells hemp clothing at affordable prices via Boheco.organd is present in 10 boutiques across the country including Creo in Mumbai, People Tree in Goa and Mo Studio in Ahmedabad. Their second, newer label is called Hemp Fabric Lab (Hempfabriclab.com) where they sell this raw material to designers like Archer Design and Sui by Sue Mue. BOHECO is happy to sell this fabric to consumers with no minimum purchase requirements. Thus, you can order just 1 meter of fabric if you wish.
“The best part about hemp fabric is that it has the look of linen but the hand feel of cotton, says co-founder Yash P Kotak. “It gets better with every wash and is the strongest natural fiber known to man. We need to be more mindful in the fashion choices we make. Typically plan A is either cotton or polyester and that’s why we call our brand B label, which means it’s time for plan B. We urge mindful consumers to look for us: the alternative that is more environmentally supportive. Even making ten percent of your wardrobe sustainable would make a huge difference!”

Can hemp be the textile of the future?

Hemp has multi-faceted uses, including the perfect canvas for Hemp Art.
California artist Mohan Sundaresan paints and weaves his paintings together using a technique that has never been seen in the art world. He does not do it for the money. In fact, last December, right before the holidays, he was facing financial issues and was on the verge of becoming homeless.
Mohan had accumulated close to 200 paintings, sculptures, and etchings on wood, paper, aluminum, and canvas over the years. Not knowing where he was going to live next, he gave them all away.
Mohan was 72 years old and had been doing odd jobs and maintenance work for a property management company. His bills were piling up and he was behind on his rent. He slept in a cold garage behind the house during the Christmas and New Years holidays.
…Life can change in a Moment
In January of 2018, Mohan’s life changed. He received a long-awaited pension, paid off his debts and moved back into the house. He now had a monthly income to pay his rent and feed his dog Dizzy, his number one priority.
With his financial pressure off, Mohan decided that he was no longer going to paint for the sake of painting. He wanted a purpose. He called me up in early January and asked if I could get him some commission work.
I have known Mohan since 2011 and felt that his creative potential was unlimited. He uses cannabis daily not only to help ease his chronic back pain but also to open his mind. So Isuggested that he do a marijuana leaf painting and sent him a deposit for art supplies. Since early this year Mohan has completed close to 20 abstract cannabis leaf paintings.
One of my favorite books is Hemp: Lifeline to the Future by Chris Conrad. It was introduced to me by a friend back in the 90’s and I keep a copy on my desk. On page 10 it states that hemp was used in the riggings and sails for Columbus’s ships. That gave me an idea. Why not hemp canvas for art? I found a source for hemp art canvas and ordered 6 yards of it for Mohan. See Mohans Hemp Art Here!
The rest is history. Hemp canvas is what he is painting on now. He loves the texture of the fabric and how it holds the paint. More importantly, he sends a message through his artwork of another use of the hemp plant.
Artist Statement
The artworks are created in my studio in La Jolla, using a technique that I developed over the years. Several processes are involved in each piece. I begin a project by putting colors on two canvasses of equal size. The colors are determined by what impressions are in my mind at the time.
Sunsets, flowers, the ocean, stars, and nature, in general, give me inspiration. The state of the world affects what thoughts are in my brain when I am painting. When they are dry, I turn each canvas face down and cut it into random curves and shapes. I add a sphere to the mix, which represents a gem.
Finally, I weave the two canvasses together around the sphere, cutting slits in strategic places so they lie flat. Each weave is carefully glued in place. The weaving is the part that I enjoy most. The message is the same in every piece. “We are all born with a gem inside us that needs to be polished. No one is better than another.”
Painting began as a hobby, then became a habit and a passion, and is today an obsession. “I can’t go a day without painting, it is such a release. I used to travel all over the world, but now I travel when I paint.”

Here it is the beginning of Fall 2018 and Hemp Industry is in full swing throughout our country and globally! Hemp is changing the landscape of our world reality! It’s exciting to see after my four short but very full years in this mega Hemp industry, the words that continue to ring true more than ever are Hemp is an emerging epic industry, Hemp is leading the way towards natural sustainability in industry, economics, environment, and wellness! Hemp is changing the landscape of our global reality, and Hemp is not going away!
Every day more & more movers & shakers around the world are discovering the multi-versatile benefits and uses of Hemp, Hemp, Hemp! Hemp oils, hemp fiber, super hemp foods and proteins, hemp clothing, hemp art, amazing hemp textiles, plastics, paper, graphite, 3D-printing and soon, Hemp bio-fuel which could completely alter the face of the petrochemical industrial complex. We are at the beginning of an epic emerging power packed time in history, and we all need to stay informed and engaged. We can only imagine how great this could be in the next 5 years or less! Yes, Hemp could be the new sustainable reality ‘if’ we pull together and free the plant, legalize Cannabis, and let our farmers grow for profit!
The challenges of our Federal Laws concerning the Cannabis Plant are still misleading, convoluted, controlling and damaging to all, to say the least. If you’re not familiar with the Hemp History, check out The Emperor Wears No Clothes with Jack Harare, https://youtu.be/lP7pcGR416A. As the saying goes, the truth will set you free after it blows your mind! This knowledge will also wake you up to what’s really going on here and help you understand why & how Hemp ended up as a Schedule1 drug, still today!
However, I did mention convoluted because Hemp is currently legal in all 50 states to eat, wear, consume as Hemp Oil/CBD and thousands of other uses, including building fire retardant housing. Currently the USA imports over a half billion dollars in Hemp products annually, but, our farmers still can’t grow in America without licensing the Ag dept (so they can study the plant) that’s been in use for 12,000 years of recorded history. It’s a stall tactic of course because hemp could also replace, paper, plastics, petrochemical, and pharmaceuticals… Now what? It’s time for we the people to wake up and declare our human rights for this plant and move forward the Hemp Industry, Hemp Production of Products, Hemp for Sustainability!
Currently and continuing on since 1937, our Federal Government has had a strong hold on keeping Hemp, a non-narcotic Cannabis plant, a Schedule 1 Drug, classified like heroin! This has gone on for over 80 years with the Petro-Chemical-Industrial-Complex running our show. However, we can see clearly as visionary & futurist ‘We the People’ are now making progress and it’s big! May I remind you there’s power in numbers, and may I encourage you to become a part of this Game Changing Revolution – You can join us when subscribing at https://hempingtonpost.com. Your participation when signatures are needed to Pass these Bills into Laws is ultra important! Once you open the #Hemp door, you’ll be forever amazed! The future of Hemp/Cannabis is mind-blowing!

Every BODY is different – not one size fits all
As I’m experiencing different CBD/Hemp Oil Product lines I can clearly say, our bodies seem to have all the same functional parts yet they appear to be very different in how they function. Not one size fits all and that’s true with most things in life! What may be great for me, may not be so great for You.
I say, commit to nothing until you’ve tried it out for at least 30 days or less if you don’t like how it makes you feel. I have gone from lethargic to anxious with various brands of CBD – I’m a tester, I settle for nothing. My body deserves only the best and I believe yours does too – It’s not easy finding the best CBD and we are worth the time invested in our self.
I have tried many CBD lines as I mentioned AND I love Randy’s Remedy. The taste, and for sure the feeling I get when I take the drops. Immediately I’m feeling clear, calm & creative, my three favorite ways to feel and my sleep is solid as a rock… and this is where my body feels optimal!

It’s a product years in the making, but Americans in 37 states can now try hemp-infused wine, the creation of Texas-based TVM Wines.
TVM’s new hemp wines are actually wine cocktails, infused with flavors like “rum and Coke” and “Texas tea,” and graced with playful names like “Forbidden,” “Covert” and “Taboo” that invite drinkers to take part in something secretive and daring. However, for the wine’s creators, the product is about more than just capitalizing on an increasingly “hip” ingredient: they’re believers in the benefits of hemp too.
“We really truly want to help people,” declared Elease Hill, vice president of sales and marketing at TVM Wines.
Each glass of hemp wine contains a full serving of hemp oil, and while Hill stops short of making any health claims about drinking the wine, there’s ample scientific evidence that hemp oil itself can provide real benefits to consumers. If Hill had her way, the wines would also include CBD oil, an extract of hemp that can offer relief to symptoms of numerous conditions from arthritis to chronic pain. However, her efforts to develop CBD-infused wine, which has already become a best-selling product in Europe were thwarted by government regulations and the ongoing war on drugs, and it took months of struggle and negotiation to even bring her hemp wines to market.
Two bottles of TVM Hemp Wines, in “Fantasy” and “Covert” flavors, are artfully posed outdoors. TVM’s Elease Hill spent months negotiating with the government in order to successfully bring hemp wine to market.
“Until the government gets off their high horse and leaves hemp alone we can’t do anything with CBD,” Hill said, with obvious frustration in her voice, when we spoke to her by phone last month.
DEA, TTB, AND THE STRUGGLE TO BRING HEMP WINE TO MARKET
Friends of the family-owned winery first suggested the idea of a hemp wine “about two years ago,” according to Hill, but her father, TVM’s chairman Ron Mittelstedt, was initially resistant due to hemp’s uncertain legal nature and lingering stigma.
The idea lingered, and soon after Hill’s sister Beth began to research hemp’s benefits. Hill herself also discovered that CBD could treat her Attention Deficit Disorder more effectively than pharmaceutical drugs. Armed with both first-hand experience and knowledge of Spain’s “Cannavine,” they were able to change their father’s opinion and began the long process of developing a new product — only to discover that there were seemingly miles of red tape in their way.
Hemp was once a staple American cash crop, and in regular use for its medicinal benefits, until it was made illegal alongside its close cousin, marijuana, in the early 20th-century. The 2014 Farm Bill legalized hemp growing in the U.S. again for “research purposes” (including market research), allowing each state to set rules around the growth of low-THC industrial hemp. Legal experts believe the farm bill, along with other legislation and legal precedents, mean that hemp-based products are fully legal in the United States.
However, the Drug Enforcement Administration continues to insist that CBD is fully illegal, and other government agencies have followed their lead.
Pres. Barack Obama signs the 2014 Farm Bill, which relegalized hemp growing in the U.S. Despite this and other legal precedents, government agencies continue to resist the sale of legal hemp products like CBD-infused hemp wine.
“When the DEA came out and said CBD is a Schedule I drug, the TTB, the Alcohol and Tobacco Trade Board, they were not going to approve any alcohol products that contain CBD unless it was in trace amounts,” Hill explained.
Without TTB approval, TVM’s products wouldn’t be assigned a “COLA number,” a crucial designation required for national distribution of alcoholic products. She soon discovered that the agency had an absurd definition of what constitutes a trace amount. At one point, the TTB rejected an earlier formula because they claimed it contained 700 parts per million of CBD, a miniscule measurement far below what could cause any effect.
Even after after agreeing to use hemp oil, rather than CBD oil, Hill still had to push for final approval. One additional challenging factor? Hemp-infused products are rare: most similar products are merely flavored with it rather than containing substantial amounts of actual hemp. One exception, which helped Hill make her case to the TTB, is Colorado High Vodka, which is actually distilled from hemp plants.
After almost two years of work, the TTB agreed to grant TVM Hemp Wines a cola number late last year. “We finally got approval actually one day before my birthday on the formulas, which is December 1st.”
The agency approved the labels later that month, and the first hemp wines went on sale in Texas stores in January.
REDUCING THE STIGMA AROUND CANNABIS, ONE GLASS OF HEMP WINE AT A TIME
The names of the hemp wines, from “Forbidden” to “Fantasy,” hint at the way cannabis has faced misunderstandings, mistrust, and persecution under the war on drugs. Hill’s struggle to receive government approval for the products, shows that the stigma around this plant is still alive even as legal barriers theoretically fall away. The early response to her wines, on the other hand, is a sign that everyday people are excited about hemp, rather than afraid of it.
A red sock monkey (don’t worry, he’s over 21!) enjoys the sweet taste of TVM’s “Forbidden” hemp wine cocktail. Consumers’ excitement over hemp wine shows the stigma around cannabis is disappearing.
“It wasn’t even on the shelves for 20 minutes and someone bought two bottles,” Hill said.
TVM’s hemp wines are already for sale — and selling fast — in several stores in Texas, with more coming soon. For the rest of us, curious hemp enthusiasts in 37 states can order the products from TVM’s page on Vinoshipper.com.
Hill isn’t done making hemp products, but she’s hoping Congress will clear up the legal confusion around hemp first. Efforts like the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, which would have fully legalized hemp and hemp products from coast to coast, have stalled in Congress so far, but advocates are hopeful that support for total legalization is growing rapidly.
“I need these bills to pass through so we can create a traditional, dry red wine with the CBD infused.”
We can’t wait to try it!
